PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCES

Professional Development Conferences are held in the spring and fall of each year in various cities in the U.S. These conferences are the sites for workshops which enable participants to improve their skills and learn more about braille code revisions, new techniques, software, hardware, and production equipment. Social functions offer the additional stimulation of informal visits with members of other organizations and agencies.

NBA PUBLICATIONS

NBA publishes a wide range of instructional materials for transcribers in the fields of mathematics, computer notation, textbook format, tactile graphics, music, and computer-assisted production.

SUBJECT MATTER CONSULTANTS

NBA has established a nation-wide network of consultants to respond to individual transcribers seeking solutions to transcribing problems.

THE NBA BULLETIN AND MEMBERSHIP

NBA's quarterly publication, the Bulletin, is available in print, braille, and on disk. The publication, designed to inform and educate, contains regular departments, of which the most important is a series of columns called "Sharpen Your Skills," a thorough summary of technical advice to keep transcribers up to date on the latest developments in their particular areas of specialization. The respective NBA skills committee chairs are responsible for these columns on a regular basis.

News and feature articles focus on modification of codes, availability of publications, tips to transcribers and subjects of interest to members and to persons working in the field of services to the visually impaired, printed with a view toward universal interest and representation. Guest writers and specialists are invited to contribute articles of timely interest. Announcement of new materials and equipment for use in the production of reading matter is made after positive value has been demonstrated.

Membership in National Braille Association is open to all individuals. Student membership is available to those enrolled in transcribing courses. A subscription to the NBA Bulletin is included in the cost of membership. In addition, members of NBA are entitled to NBA merit awards and continuing service certificates, reduced registration fees for professional development conferences, and special rates for publications.

Agencies, organizations and libraries are invited to subscribe to the Bulletin. These entities are not considered individual members and are not, therefore, entitled to merit awards, continuing service certificates, or reduced registration fees for meetings and conferences.
