“We designate the inverse tangent function by arctan.”

I know that arctan is a function name. My question is, for the purposes of italicizing it under section 33, is it considered a word or mathematical expression?

Hi Barbara. Sorry I dropped the ball on this one.

If “arctan” is an abbreviated function name, the punctuation indicator would be required. So I would consider it a math expression and would use the open and close italic indicators.
