Line-numbered prose without actual numbers

I’m doing an SAT prep book in which the Reading bit has the beginning of every fifth line marked with ()(). It’s an e-book so there are no actual numbers for lines (or even print pages).

To number or not to number, that is the question.

Sorry for the delay in responding. Our site is having notification issues. If you have not already handled this situation, my answer is that there is no rule or guideline for this. My opinion is not to number as there are no numbers in print.
