For this situation I would defer to UEB Section 2.1 definition for letters-sequences. It states:

“an unbroken string of alphabetic signs preceded and followed by non-alphabetic signs, including space”

If there is intentional text reference to the use of typewriter written words I would still use the passage indicator following print and an embedded TN explaining the use of  underline word indicators.
