I'm struggling to really understand when I should keep a typeface attribute with single letters (I'm working on Lesson 15).

    On Lesson 15, Drill 36, #14 the example: Little Tonya sang clearly, "a, b, c, d, e, f, g."

The drill answer shows that the italics passage indicator is used for the letters in the quote marks. I thought the italics attribute would have been ignored because BF 5.3.2 (Ignore font attributes used for letters that mean letters and are shown standing alone, with or without punctuation.) One person had told me that this was a type on the answer key, but I just want to make sure I'm not missing something.

When I read it, it seemed to me the italics was used to show the letters were just letters, or to make that character's quote more decorative. I didn't see there a need for emphasis over weighing either of the rules. My brain also gets very literal so maybe I'm misunderstanding on this circumstance.

Can someone help me understand why we would reflect the italics passage on this one? Thanks!

Your question refers to the NLS Instruction Manual. For clarification on their publication, I would direct you to email your concerns to tanscibers@nfb.org.
