open circle used for answer

I am transcribing 2nd grade math signs of comparison. For the answer area they have an open circle. So ex: 157 () 214
Is there a rule about this for this grade? I have been looking but have found nothing.
I appreciate any help.

Because tactiles are encouraged for this age reader, I generally draw the circles. There is no rule that prohibits you from using the circle shape to represent these circles to be filled in.
