Space between Number indicator and number

Hi,

In BF Sample 11.8 (Section 11 Tables and Related Columns), the number indicator is aligned and in some of the entries is followed by a space. Could you explain this usage and When is it appropriate to use a space after the number indicator

The spacing as in 11-8 is used when the numbers are aligned for calculation. This spacing (between the numeric indicator and the following number) is not required when the numbers are aligned by place value.
