Use of () opening & closing parentheses

      I have the following directions in a Spanish Workbook:

      Instrucciones Copia el plural correcto de los sustantivos entre ( ).

      7. Las (avestruces, avestruzes) escarbaban en el suelo.
      8. Encontraron unas (lombrizes, lombrices) y se las comieron.

      Etc.

      My question is do I put an opening paren space closing paren period
      Or
      Opening paren no space closing paren period

      Or is there another way of doing this?
