Hi, I have question about the Spacing of Abbreviated Function Names.
From NFB Nemeth lesson 14.3 "Spacing of Abbreviated Function Names Within a mathematical expression, the following spacing rules are observed. These rules apply regardless of the spacing used in the print copy.
    a. No space comes before an abbreviated function name unless it follows a sign of
comparison or other symbol that requires spacing.
    b. A space is required after an abbreviated function name or its inverse (the space follows the
superscript). There is one exception – see 14.3.2, below. "

However, I was wondering how to handle the spacing in these cases. Please see the attached file. If I applied the wrong rules, please let me know which ones I should review.

    Thank you for your help!

Hi Soo Ja. Thank you for your question.

Section 14.3 in Lesson 14 is only part of the rule. A subscript applied to a function name isn't addressed until Sections 14.7 and 14.7.2. (The subscript is unspaced from the function name.) I suggest researching your questions in the code book first, where the complete rules are stated. NC 18.4.1 may answer your question: "If the function name or its abbreviated form carries a superscript, subscript, modifier, or other braille indicator, the [required] space follows the superscript, subscript, termination of modifier, or other braille indicator." Example 18-10 illustrates this spacing rule. So does Example 14-41 (NC 18.2 refers you to NC 14.6).
