Our guys have a braille question. Can you begin a typeform passage if the first word is in the middle of a symbol sequence as in following a dash? The alternative would be to use a word indicator for the word after the dash and then the passage indicator for the rest of the passage.

    Example 1:

This was what it must feel like to ride–The Maid of the Mist under the falls.

There is an example in the UEB rule book with the passage indicator follows a slash in section 9.4.4 in the following example.

    Example 2:

In C:\My Documents\letter to dad 041023.doc, the underlined part is the filename.

    ⠠⠔ ⠠⠉⠒⠸⠡⠠⠍⠽ ⠠⠙⠕⠉⠥⠰⠞⠎⠸⠡⠸⠶⠇⠑⠞⠞⠻⠐⠐ ⠞⠕ ⠙⠁⠙ ⠼⠚⠙⠁⠚⠃⠉⠸⠄⠲⠙⠕⠉⠂ ⠮ ⠐⠥⠇⠔⠫ ⠐⠏ ⠊⠎ ⠮ ⠋⠊⠇⠑⠐⠝⠲

Our translation software is going strictly by the rule stated in 9.4.2 which says: A passage is three or more symbols-sequences. So by definition a symbol sequence is unbroken string between spaces. We would appreciate your thoughts.

    Hello,

Tell the guys, thank you for their question.

I look at the dash as the end of the previous text as opposed to the beginning of the following text. That being said, neither interpretation of the dash would limit the use of the italics passage indicator. The correct use would be to place it after the dash.

Does this apply to passage that begins in the middle of a symbol sequence that is not broken up by punctuation?
