I am currently transcribing material that was originally prepared using an “old-fashioned manual typewriter”.

The material uses underlining to emphasize words which would now be shown in italics. Ex: Titles of newspapers and books. In print each word is underlined individually. If there are 3 or more words, such as a 5 word book title, would I use the underline word indicator on each word which is following print or would I use the underline passage indicator which does not follow print.

I am looking forward to your response.

For this situation I would defer to UEB Section 2.1 definition for letters-sequences. It states:

"an unbroken string of alphabetic signs preceded and followed by non-alphabetic signs, including space"

If there is intentional text reference to the use of typewriter written words I would still use the passage indicator following print and an embedded TN explaining the use of  underline word indicators.

Hope this explains it well enough.
