    Good evening!

Could you please tell me if the plotted number shown above the number line (117,290) in print would be placed above the number line in braille? And if so, would the first digit, the 1, be aligned above the solid circle, or would the numeric indicator be aligned? Thank you for your help.

    Susan

    Hi Susan!

The last bullet point for GSTG 6.5.1.8 indicates that "...labels for plotted points must be moved above the number line regardless of their placement in print."

GSTG 6.5.1.1 tells us that a numeric indicator is not to be used when a number occurs below the number line...

However, 6.5.1.1 also indicates that a numeric indicator is used before a number above the number line.

So, in your case, yes you will include a numeric indicator for the number placed above the number line.

Finally, GSTG 6.5.1.8 tells us that the first digit of a numeric label should be aligned with the coordinate or scale mark. These labels for plotted points must be moved above the number line regardless of their placement in print. (In your case, the "coordinate or scale mark" is a solid circle.)

Your example already places the label for the plotted point above the number line so you will keep it there in your transcription and TG.

That should handle everything! We hope this helps 🙂

I appreciate your helpful guidance, and I have a follow up question, which I should have put in the original post.

This transcription is for a UEB with Nemeth project.  Would the same advice work for this code?

    Thank you!

    Hi Susan!

For your follow-up question, we can revisit GSTG 6.5.1.1 and 6.5.1.8:

6.5.1.1 A numeric indicator is not used before a number if it occurs below the number line, whether the number is whole, fractional, decimal, or negative. A numeric indicator is used before a number above the number line. Follow these guidelines for the numeric indicator regardless of whether the number line is transcribed in UEB or Nemeth Code. (See Supplement Example 7: Box-and-Whisker Plots.)

GSTG 6.5.1.8 goes into more detail regarding labels on a number line when labels include letters or symbols other than numbers, but advice in our previous reply regarding placement of your label applies whether using UEB-technical, or Nemeth in a UEB context.

    Hope this helps!
