I've encountered two notes (intervals) preceded by a short vertical bracket indicating they are both to be played with the same finger, but there are no fingering numbers, just the bracket. I think I should use the 5-3, 6-2 small brackets (MBC-97 General Table, p. 2) with an appropriate description on the SS page. Do you have a better solution?

I think you have a good solution; I can't find anything more appropriate. However, if it is obvious that the two notes are to be played by the thumb (it almost always is), I would supply the first-finger sign after the note and the interval sign as illustrated in MBC Example 14.3.1, since the bracket is vertical instead of horizontal.
