Italics and Parenthesis

I need to italicize the following as a paragraph heading. Do parenthesis terminate the effect of the italic sign? In other words, can I use the double italics before the "R" and single italics before the number 1 (notice there are no spaces between the parenthesis).

Hi,

A parenthesis does not terminate the effect of the emphasis indicator. Are the numbers emphasized? If they are not, you would use a single emphasis indicator before each word Reading and Writing.
