In a series of capitalized letters in parentheses, does UEB require the capitalized passage indicator? Or is it acceptable to capitalize each letter separately? UEB 8.5.4 allows for capital letters adjacent to a caps passage to be capitalized separately. That's not exactly the case here, but it does set precedent for treating individual letters separately. Also, with three letters, using the passage indicator uses 2 additional cells.

"If you have made the trades properly, you should have placed 10's in the trade-in boxes of Columns (A), (B), (C), and (D) and −1's in the trade-out boxes ..."

    "<,a">1 "<;,b">1 "<;,c">1 & "<;,d">

    or

    "<,,,a">1 "<;b">1 "<;c">1,' & "<;,d">

    or

    "<,,,a">1 "<;b">1 "<;c,'">1 & "<;,d">

If using the passage indicator and terminator, would the terminator go after the comma, or after the C?

    Thanks!

    Hi Rebecca,

My apologies for the delay. In this case, your first option of capitalizing each letter individually is much more readable than the other two methods. Great question!

Thanks, Julie! I thought so too. I just couldn't find a rule stating that it was OK to choose the caps indicators based on readability.

    Best,
    Rebecca
