Why and is the word I supposed to have a letter sign before it in a work problem? example: I have a 5 in my ones place. The word I has a letter sign before it and also the ending. What number am I? Has a letter sign before word I and punctuation indicator after it/before question mark?

The word I would not have a letter sign or a punctuation indicator associated with it. This would only be the case if it is actually the letter I.
