    Hi there,

Under the rules of EBAE, you would need a letter indicator in each of the instances enumerated below, for the fact that you have letters following a number and a hyphen. Yes, it would not be misread as a number but the rule clearly states that it is needed following a number and a hyphen. Hope this helps.

    Hi Lynnette!

I don't believe I have ever encountered a copyright date written in Roman numerals! I have searched through EBAE for a rule regarding Roman Numerals ... and dates ... and have come up with nothing that specifically addresses that issue. All that being said, I believe you are safe to "follow print" and braille those Roman numerals as Roman numerals. Hope this helps.

I believe this question can be better answered in Formats ... please repost there ... unless you are using UEB, then repost there. Off the top of my head, (as I am not at home with my materials and references at my fingertips) I would say the closing italics indicator would come after the opening parenthesis and before the abbreviation.

    Hello,

This type of situation is not specifically addressed in EBAE. We know that the print reads ABC and that's double capped. The letters that follow the number have nothing to do with the letters at the beginning. The number sign has terminated the caps in order to institute numbers, so the only question is whether numbers are continuing or changing into letters. In this case, there are letters following numbers so, you would need the letter indicator to indicate you are going from numbers to letters. If the letters after the numbers were also double capped, the double caps would have to be used again after the letter sign.

    [braille],,abc#abc;abc

To answer your question, I think the number sign terminates the double caps ABC. And the letter sign after the number terminates the number.

    Hope this helps.

Sorry to respond so late in the game. My alerts must have been turned off.

I have found the following titles useful when I start working with new transcribers. I use them mainly for adding to their experience and more information. Hope they help you. The following are available from AFB Press. You can Google their site and visit their amazing bookstore.

    Susan,

Are you working on a certification manuscript? If so, you must follow the rules in the 5th edition and EBAE. If this is for something other than the certification manuscript, the rules have changed and you should follow the rule for blank lines in Formats 2011. As for the wording, I do not have my 5th edition or EBAE at home and I am off for the summer. All I can tell you is when I was a student, I was taught only one blank line between title and author and additional blanks lines could be spaced between the other groupings, starting at the bottom. This is how I have been teaching my students for the past 12 years. I can tell you when I submitted my manuscript for certification, I had two blank lines between each group, including the title and author. I was marked off and told the extra line should have gone in the bottom grouping, meaning the top would have one line between title and author, each of the other groups would have two lines, except the bottom group, which would have had 3 lines. As a result of my error, I have taught my students that only one blank line can be left between title and author and none of my students have been deducted points for doing so. If you have additional questions, may I suggest you contact Jennifer Dunnam at NFB for further clarification. I hope this helps.

If those funny symbols only appear on the jacket, you would braille them as accented letters (with a dot 4 preceding the accented letter), according to literary braille. You would have to put in a transcriber's note stating the change. If it was throughout the text, you would assign it a symbol, and place the explanation on the Special Symbols page. If you are brailling this book according to formats, you would need to post your question there ...

In literary braille, no matter what funny symbol is being shown with any of the letters, all are brailled using a dot 4 before the letter marked with an accent or funny symbol in print.

    I hope this helps.

    Hello there,

Thank you for your question. Do these symbols only appeaar in the title or do they appear throughout the book? Can you attach a scan of the page showing these marks? I will be answering this post for Saralyn but need to know whether it is justthe title or throughout the book.

    Thanks,
    Jana

I'm sorry I didn't mention that I am brailling the book for a blind friend in textbook format. Please would you look at the attached ways of brailling the Bible reference: John 3:16? I'm trying to find out which method to use.

    Thank you!

    Hi Ruth,
So sorry for the delay in responding to your question. I think this one must have slipped through the cracks.

Rule II.10.b refers to book titles, publications, ships, and pictures that would require some sort of emphasis in print.
For example, in a printed document, book titles are always in italics, underlined, etc., thus each separate title needs to emphasized individually.

Section 15.1d refers to names of birds. This would not require special print emphasis just because they are birds, so the list can treated as a group and double emphasis is used.

    I hope this helps,
    Saralyn

    Hi Tina,

If you are transcribing this in a literary format, there is no page change indicator. If you need to document page changes, please use textbook format.
